If spending day after day on a beach isn't for you, then a holiday to Es Castell just might be. On the east coast of the island, close to the spectacular southern beaches and the capital Mahon, El Castell is the perfect base to explore from for people who like a little of everything in their Menorcan holiday. Built next to the Fort of San Felip, it is a town steeped in history.

Originally named Georgetown, after George III, by the British during their second occupation and built in square block military style, it still retains a colonial feel. The central square was once the main parade ground for the town. With a commanding position over the entrance to Mahon's harbour, Es Castell has many museums and interesting places to visit for history buffs. Mahon is just a half-hour walk or bus ride away – the town has even become a fashionable place for the locals to live. And being the most easterly point on the island, this is the first place in Spain to see the sun rise!
