Fuerteventura is my favourite of the Canary Islands and one of the best holiday spots of all time - I fell in love with the island after my visit last April and I cannot wait to go back…

I had an opportunity to see the “real Fuerteventura”- the beauty is its landscapes and rural heritage with the added bonus of a local guide who took me on a journey not only around the island, but also through the most significant historic and environmental facts that have shaped the island.

For me Fuerteventura is appealing for many reasons, none more so than the fantastic climate - temperatures rarely fall below 18°C (64°F) or rise above 24°C (75°F) - making it ideal for a beach holiday, and there are 152 to choose from. The southern part of the island, particularly the resorts Morro Jable and Jandia, are known for their perfect waves and many surfers meet here. Personally, my favourite beach is in Corralejo, which has 7 miles of white sand and the water is crystal clear with an intense shade of blue.

I found Costa Caleta and Jandia to have the most relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, whilst Corralejo had that little bit more nightlife and was definitely the liveliest area on the island, with a choice of great restaurants, pubs and nightclubs.

As Fuerteventura is entirely created by volcanoes it boasts breathtaking mountain landscapes, and if you enjoy keeping fit, there are mountain trekking excursions available (a bit too much for my fitness personally!) Cycling is also very popular as the roads are not too busy and the scenery is outstanding.

If you are an animal lover better not miss out on the Oasis Park, which is the biggest animal park in the Canary Islands, and while driving trough the southern part of the island we spotted chipmunks and geckos. More impressive though, Fuerteventura is home to half of the total species of whales and dolphins so it's definitely worth doing a boat trip to look for them in their natural habitat.
