In my opinion Dubrovnik really is 'the Pearl of the Adriatic'. When greeted by the clear blue crystal waters and stunning rocky coastline it immediately becomes obvious why so many people have already been won over. Just a 2.5 hr flight from the UK will bring you to this stunning area of natural beauty, short enough for a weekend city break but enough history, diverse landscape and culinary delights to fill a 3 week adventure! A brief 20 minute drive from the airport will transport you to a 7th century city steeped in history. Despite its age and turbulent past none of this is evident in its appearance - well preserved and in pristine condition.
I think Dubrovnik old town can be best appreciated at night, when the real heart and soul of the city truly shines through. Being someone who likes to take advantage of local food, wine and music, I couldn't have found myself in a better place. Behind every limestone cobbled corner a different taste was catered for from jazz to dance; whatever your preference this town easily accommodates! My personal favourite place to enjoy a late night tipple was in the infamous Croatian Cave (Buza) bars which offer an oceanfront setting for the ideal spot to reflect on the day's activities. The influence of its neighbour Italy, can definitely be felt in the cuisine - gelato, pizza, pasta - so at times I had to remind myself I was in Croatia!
The highlight of my trip, and I'm confident it will be yours too, has to be the walk around the ancient city walls. Constructed between the 12th and 17th centuries, they surround the bright orange rooftops typical of the region, and despite taking photo after photo, you'll never be able to capture the magic you feel. They also offer the best view point in the whole town!
Once satisfied with your city adventures, the outlying islands await you! Lokrum, Lopud, Mijet are all easily achievable in a day, although I promise once you're there you will try to find any excuse not to leave! Dubrovnik also makes an excellent base to visit neighbouring countries such as Montenegro and Bosnia.
