Cyprus: Introduction

Cyprus: the very name conjures up images of mythology, sun and history. The birthplace of Aphrodite and Adonis and one time kingdom of King Pygmalion, maybe the world’s first style guru! There have been welcoming visitors for over 10,000 years. In fact almost every ancient empire has at some stage had a go at staying here. There are also the beaches. Sit at a beachside restaurant, enjoying the wonderful food on offer, and watch the glorious sunset as the warmth of the day’s sun still lingers on your body. As you drink in the view you can try some of the many quality wines that Cyprus is famous for, or thanks to its long association with Britain, enjoy a well-made cup of tea.

Though Cyprus continues to be partitioned, with the UN administered Green Line running through the middle of the capital Nicosia, the holidaymaker will see little evidence. Surrounded by city walls built by the Venetians the visitor on a Cyprus package holiday can wander the streets taking in the warm welcome from the locals and sample their fine coffee and food, try the halloumi cheese, the Cypriots invented it.

All the resorts from Coral Bay and Latchi in the west, through to Limassol and Protaras in the east, offer sun and sand in abundance. The climate is sub-tropical and warm all the year round. In fact Cyprus has the warmest climate in the European Union so getting there is no problem. Also the summer season lasts for eight months so there’s no hurry! From April to November there’s plenty of sunshine and the sea stays warm.
