LANZAROTE ACTIVITIES

Windsurfing

Windsurfing, LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS

Lanzarote is one of the world's best windsurfing venues, especially between May and August. With its huge, sandy beaches, clear waters and regular stiff breezes, the island boasts ideal conditions for gliding over the waves. The climate and conditions are so perfect that Lanzarote is used as a training ground by many of the sport's champions. Many beaches have windsurfing schools that offer high quality instruction for newcomers. If you're eager to try it out or improve your skills, the best locations are Costa Teguise for beginners and, for the experienced, Jameos del Agua on the north-east coast.

LANZAROTE SIGHTS

Beaches

Beaches, LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS

There are some excellent stretches of beach in Lanzarote. With its numerous small coves and abundant marine life, Jabillo Beach is great for families. Puerto del Carmen offers Playa Chica, Playa Grande and Playa de los Pocillos beaches, while Playa Blanca has three excellent stretches including the golden sandy beach of Papagayo.

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park, LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS

Timanfaya, Lanzarote's biggest attraction, is also known as the 'Mountains of Fire' and makes for an unforgettable trip. Formed in the 18th century when around 30 volcanoes erupted in succession, the Park is composed of vast, desert-like landscapes and 36 volcanoes, all dominated by the towering red and black volcano known as 'Islote de Hilario'. You can drive, take a tour bus or even ride a camel up to the top of its slopes, where El Diablo, a glass-walled restaurant built by Cesar Manrique, stands at the summits offering exhilarating views. Here, you can tuck into superb food grilled in an outdoor crater and witness the volcano's searing heat. A fantastic and intriguing destination for all ages to enjoy.

Cueva de los Verdes - 'Green Caves'

Cueva de los Verdes - 'Green Caves', LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS

Located in northern Lanzarote, the 'Green Caves' are one of the island's finest spectacles. Created 5,000 years ago by streams of lava that seeped underground, these ghostly tunnels served as hideouts for Arab slave hunters and pirates, and make a haunting experience. You can take a guided tour into the caves, a journey made even more memorable by the music and multi-coloured light show that highlights the hues of the walls and illuminates the strange rock formations. Highlights include the sight of the awe-inspiring inner hall called the Refuge, which only one person can enter at a time, and the brilliant optical illusion at the end of the tour.
