Centred round a quaint harbour, with a selection of open-air restaurants and tavernas, Rethymnon is full of charm and is perfect for a relaxing sun and sightseeing holiday. Not least of its attractions is its excellent golden beach which starts right in the centre of the town and stretches for miles. Behind the harbour lies Rethymnon's Old Town, a warren of narrow streets and squares with cheerful cafes and craft shops and an imposing Venetian fortress. By night the town offers discos and bars along the main coastal strip, as well as some old town bars. A friendly atmosphere abounds in Rethymnon, and in July, a colourful wine festival hits town. There are a number of beaches along the coastline and Knossos, with its ancient ruins, is easily accessible.
