Portugal - Silves holidays

introduction to Silves

Beneath its tranquil atmosphere, Silves has a rich and colourful history. An important commercial town due to its location on the Arade, it was first settled during Roman times. Later becoming part of the Moorish kingdom of Cordoba, it was the capital of the Algarve province, and had a population of 30,000. The various owners of the town have left it with a legacy of stunning architecture, including a turreted castle, and a 13th century Gothic church containing Crusader tombs. Visitors to the town will enjoy a stroll around the magnificent buildings, set within preserved city walls made from the local sandstone.
