Beruwela is near a small fishing village, attractively sited on a rocky headland. The palm-shaded beaches are protected by offshore bars and are great for watersports. Kalutara lies just to the north and is a bustling town, once the centre of Sri Lanka's spice trade. It lies next to a long stretch of sand, gently shelving into the sea. Bentota is found south of Beruwela on the south bank of the Bentota River. It is favoured by watersports enthusiasts and has some great beaches.
