Bangkok sights
Grand Palace
With its contrasting use of Thai and European architecture, and its enviable location on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, the impressive Grand Palace is a must-see on any trip to Thailand. For 150 years, the palace was home to the King and his court, as well as being an administrative seat of the government, however nowadays the palace is only used for special ceremonies. Ensure you allow enough time to marvel at the greatly revered Emerald Buddha, before taking in the abundance of golden spires, which glimmer in the sun.
Chao Phraya River
The largest and most important river in Thailand, this river flowing through the heart of the city is an important lifeline for the country as whole, used for transport, commerce, and celebration. It's an excellent way to see a different perspective of the city, and a great way to travel to the Grand Palace. Choose from different ways of exploring the river, ranging from a converted rice barge, luxury cruiser, or along with the locals on an express ferry.
Floating Markets
Outside of the city, beyond the orchards and traditional teak houses, lies the Floating Market at Damnoen Saduak. A series of canals, or 'kloengs', are full of small flat canoes offering an amazing selection of fresh produce. Despite being a well known and well-populated tourist destination, it is still worth a visit to experience the chaos, noise, enthusiam and overall atmosphere of this bustling scene.
