Crete is an island that I could visit over and over again as there is so much to see and do, it's impossible to fit it all into one visit!

My favourite resorts on the island are without doubt those surrounding the Gulf of Mirabello, which literally means “beautiful view”. The views of the sea and mountains from here are simply breathtaking and Aghios Nikolaos, is a great base to stay in this part of the island. One of my favourite ways to spend a morning is sitting with a coffee in one of the many restaurants surrounding the infamous 'bottomless lake' of Ag Nik, just watching the world go by.

Crete has too many attractions to mention, however, the most memorable ones for me include Knossos Palace, the island of Spinalonga and the ancient village settlement of Olous. The latter is probably the least well-known but was without doubt the highlight of my last trip, although I have to confess that it wasn't the history that impressed me but the beautiful tranquil coastal walk from Elounda to Olous, passing by salt plains and ancient windmills along the way. If you continue along this coastal path you will eventually reach the bay of Kolokitha with its crystal clear water and deserted sandy coves, which are the perfect reward after all that walking! That's just the thing with Crete - you never know what hidden gem you will discover next.

If you're looking for nightlife and to party into the early hours, then Malia or Hersonissos won't disappoint with their wall-to-wall bars and discos. But for me the evenings are all about sampling the local food in traditional tavernas - I always order “Dakos” a tasty Cretan signature dish made from Greek bread, cheese, tomatoes and herbs which is perfect to share as a meze with friends, as an alternative to the standard pitta bread and dips.
