Elounda : Holiday Accommodation

Fancy combining a family holiday with membership of the jet-set? Then a package holiday to Elounda is right up your street as this resort is a favourite with senior politicians from Greece and the Saudi royal family. The reason? The beautiful beaches, stunning views and wonderful restaurants and tavernas, which await your arrival. Situated on the north eastern coast of Crete on the shore of Mirabello Bay this small fishing village offers up the perfect backdrop for the classic Greek holiday. During the Ancient Greek period there was a major city, Olous, here that fell into the sea and is still visible when diving in the bay. There are several diving schools here, for both the novice and experienced diver which only adds to that beach holiday fun.

The area is also famous for its proximity to the former leper colony of Spinalonga, located on the island of Kalydon, where there is also a Venetian fortress that dates from the mid 1500s. Even after Crete fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1669 the fortress on Kalydon held out for another fifty years. It was an active leper colony up until 1957 and these days it is one of the major tourist attractions. A boat from Elounda only takes fifteen minutes and there are guided tours that bring the history of the island to life. Across from the island, on the coast of Crete, is the small fishing village of Plaka where you can eat by the sea, taking in the view of Kalydon, or head up to the plateau behind the village which is beautiful and has several places to stop off at on the way up
