Gouves : Holiday Accommodation

Gouves lies around 20 kilometres east of Heraklion and covers quite a wide area as it is a purpose built resort area. Technically there is Kato Gouves, or lower Gouves, where the beaches, hotels and apartments are and there is and the traditional village of Pano Gouves, upper Gouves, which is built into the side of the small Mount Ederi, which has some pretty impressive views over the bay. It has everything you’ll need for a family holiday: tavernas, restaurants, bars and shops of every description as well as a large number of ATMs, and of course a trio of lovely sandy beaches where all forms of water sports are available.

Along the seafront at Gouves is one of Crete’s finest seaside promenades called Possidonos Street. This walkway runs for about three kilometres along the front, with ornate street lamps at regular spacing, with numerous seaside tavernas and bars. There is also a boat marina and a pretty little church on an outcrop of rock to make the evening stroll more interesting. The beaches are very popular and tend to get very busy with sun worshippers, though a walk to the west past the church will take you to some of the most gorgeous and secluded sandy beaches in Greece.
