The long seafront is lined with places to eat, from the all-day breakfast variety up to a la carte alfresco restaurants offering quality cuisine. In the older streets that fold back from the sea there are traditional tavernas, so if you’re on a cheap holiday or a family holiday there’s somewhere to suit your pocket. In mid-summer Hersonissos buzzes with life but if you need a break, villages like Piskopiano, a short trip up the hill, offer peace and wonderful views from one of the quiet restaurants there. Hersonissos is also well placed for sightseeing tours. Crete is very large but a trip to the ancient Minoan city of Knossos should be pencilled in, as well as a drive into the interior which will reveal hills dotted with ancient ruins and tiny villages offering a warm welcome.

The extended summer months means that Hersonissos will usually have some sun available for the weary traveller. Even during the winter months the resort will guarantee a welcome break, in fact the term “Halcyon Days” refers to a one week period in January when the weather stops its winter grumbling and the temperatures rise.
