Rethymnon
Holidays
Since 1987 Rethymnon has hosted the annual Renaissance Festival which runs from late July to September and is internationally known and respected. The whole town is given over to a celebration of the arts, from classic theatre to music from the Renaissance to modern times. There are street performers and dancing with much of the formal action taking place in the Erofili Theatre which is based inside the wonderful Fortezza, an old castle that overlooks the town. At Easter time there is the Rethymnon Carnival, the most famous in Crete, which has its roots in the Venetian period as the streets fill up with masked revellers all there for the night time parades and processions as well as the carousing and fun.
Though the climate around Rethymnon is as you expect to find in northern Crete one of the joys of the place is that it’s the perfect all year round destination for a cheap holiday. The mild climate of the winter months won’t have an impact on your enjoyment of this jewel of the Mediterranean and the long hot summer days will be filled with beach and gentle visits to the cooler shaded streets of this beautiful port.
The old mansions, though not as impressive as the ones found in Venice, are beautiful but strong Cretan influences shine through. During the 250 years of Ottoman rule the city was added to considerably with the Turkish rulers modifying many of the existing buildings and constructing many more so a stroll around the streets of Rethymnon is like a journey through the past.
