I am always fascinated as I enter the island of Lefkas, crossing over from the mainland on the swing bridge, and passing the fortress as you drive down the narrow road. Lefkas Town is very charming and has lots of shops, bars and tavernas, and we really enjoy spending a couple of nights in town during our stay, meandering through the streets and dining alfresco.

We always stay in a small self-catering apartment in Nidri, which at first sight didn't look typically Greek, but we found enough to change that view. It has plenty of restaurants along the marina front to keep us happy and there are also some bars and cafés offering alternatives for lunch and dinner along the main street, as well as the expected shops, which I had no trouble spending in!

The beach in Nidri is pebbly and narrow but the sea is extremely shallow and beautifully clear, so days can easily be spent lazing about. As Lefkas is so small, using the bus to get about was a breeze, and there are plenty of boat trips you can take as well to explore the island from the water. My favourite was a trip to Scorpios, owned by a famous Greek shipping family.

Otherwise, walking was a big pastime as there were so many to choose from. The one that stands out for me, began close to our apartment, up to some waterfalls. It started on tarmac alongside the river, then changed into an unmade track; from memory we passed two smaller waterfalls and then came to the large ones. We didn't have our swimming costumes with us, but as we were so warm, and it was so quiet, we still went for a dip…

One day we hired a car and went to the west of the island, where the beaches were beautiful, and spent an entire afternoon at Kathisma beach. We also got the ferry to Kefalonia from Nidri and in just over an hour we were in Fiskardo, a lovely village. We had a great time wandering around the port. Meganissi can also be visited from Lefkas, so maybe we'll do that when we come back, which we surely will.
