Lefkas: Introduction

Lefkas is an island in the Ionian Sea near the west coast of Mainland Greece. Lefkas means “white” and the island’s white cliffs are beautiful and dramatic especially on the island’s west coast. The island is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. Things to see and do
What attracts many tourists to the island to take part in its excellent wind and kite surfing activities. Vassiliki in the south of the island has a world class windsurfing centre. Take a day trip to Meganissi, the largest of the offshore islets and visit the large and impressive sea caves. The Papanikolas Cave is famous for housing a submarine in World War Two. Lie on the beach or enjoy swimming in the turquoise waters in the sheltered bay of Nidri. If you are feeling active, explore the beautiful landscape and olive groves on foot or by bike. Lefkas produces excellent olive oil, citrus, honey (made by thyme), grapes and wine. Lefkas produces the Bertzami, the best wine in Greece. Apart from the wine, you can try some of the aromatic liqueurs, such as: rosoli, mint and rose, and soymada, a soft drink made from almonds.

Weather
Due to the thermal winds that cross the island, the climate in Lefkas is slightly different to the other Ionian Islands. Temperature wise, Lefkas is similar to other islands in that it has hot summers and mild winters, however, it does experience more wind than neighboring islands
