2008 News Archive - Holidays - A glass more than half full

30 10 2007

One might have thought December would have enough about St Nicholas in his role as Santa Claus, with all the modern ideas of reindeers and presents, but, unknown to many, he is also the patron saint of glassblowers.

This aspect may not feature on many Christmas cards but it's the centrepiece of the Festa di San Nicolo in Venice in December (date to be confirmed), reports Whatsonwhen.

In true Venetian style the occasion is marked with a regatta, with boats sailing to the island of Murano, which is famous for its rich glass-blowing traditions.

So in addition to enjoying the festivities, visitors to the beautiful and romantic city on the edge of the Adriatic will be able to pick up some presents after all by purchasing beautiful glassware items from the island.

In the meantime, the traditional delights of Venice, from its architecture to the leisurely punting along the gran canal, can be enjoyed as much as ever.
