2008 News Archive - Holidays - Ahoy matey - pirate ship discovered off Dominican Republic

14 12 2007

Pirates have come back into the limelight in recent years thanks to Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

And in a tale that could have come straight off a film script, an underwater recovery team have discovered remnants of a ship thought to have been once captained by infamous adventurer William Kidd off the Dominican Republic.

Some historians believe that Kidd commandeered the Quedagh Merchant, which would have been loaded with valuable goods such as silks and gold but left it in the Caribbean to sail to New York in order to clear his name of criminal charges.

"When I first looked down and saw it, I couldn't believe everybody missed it for 300 years. I've been on thousands of wrecks and this is one of the first where it's been untouched by looters," commented scuba-diving archaeologist from Indiana University, Charles Beeker.

He added that he looked forward to a "meticulous" examination of the "living museum".
