A Tunisian newspaper has reported that a UK-based low-cost airline has submitted a request to the Tunisian aviation authorities for permission to operate flights to Tunisia - a move which could be indicative of Tunisia's growing popularity as a tourist destination.

According to Le Temps, easyJet recently submitted a formal request to the Civil Aviation and Airports Office asking for permission to fly to the cities of Tunis, Monastir and Djerba.

If granted, the request would make easyJet the fourth low-cost European airline to operate services to the country.

Tunisia has been benefitting from a tourism boom of late, with figures from last year indicating that tourism revenues rose by six per cent on 2007, as tourists increasingly flock to its warm Mediterranean coasts.

With the unfavourable euro exchange rate, UK tourists are increasingly looking outside the eurozone for their fix of sun, sea and sand, which means that the country could become even more of a holiday hotspot during 2009.
