2008 News Archive - Holidays - Alarme-ingly good

30 10 2007

Visitors to Malta in December will not just be able to enjoy some Mediterranean sunshine but also enjoy a historic re-enactment of a key moment in the island nation's history.

Long before three Gloucester Gladiator biplanes fought off the Italian air force in WWII, it was Napoleon who brought a threat from the continent, invading and conquering in 1798.

That wasn't the end of the story, however, as the great rebellion of the Maltese against the French ultimately brought the surrender of the invaders.

On the third Sunday of each month this period is re-enacted in a show called Alarme! with mock battles between soldiers in period dress, held at the impressive Fort St Elmo in the capital Valletta.

The fort stands at the end of a spithead by the harbour and dates from the 16th century, providing an historic attraction in itself.

Visitors will find that the rest of Valletta also contains plenty of historic charms.
