2008 News Archive - Holidays - Algarve 'remains popular with Brits'

31 10 2008

A report has shown holidays to Portugal's Algarve continue to be popular among British people.

Statistics released by Turismo do Algarve revealed 400,000 British holidaymakers used Faro Airport in September.

Furthermore, October was the busiest month of the year for rounds of golf, the Resident website said, following 100,000 rounds played the previous month.

The region is also favoured by visitors from Holland, the report found, with the number of Dutch people using the airport increasing by 9.2 per cent in September.

Global economic issues have negatively affected other sectors, however, and Faro has seen a 4.9 per cent fall in total passenger numbers. There has also been a decline in the number of British guests in hotels - but Portuguese, Dutch and Irish visitors pushed occupancy up 0.5 per cent in August.

The Algarve region boasts a Mediterranean climate, beaches and towns with narrow streets, plus fresh seafood and traditional mountain dishes, the Visit Algarve website states.
