2008 News Archive - Holidays - Beauty pageant with a difference on UAE holidays

03 04 2008

Taking a holiday in the United Arab Emirates this week, Britons are in for a real treat: a beauty pageant for camels.

Features that judges will be looking out for on the camels in the competition, which is being held in Abu Dhabi, will include a high hump, big eyes, a drooping nose, a slim neck and long legs, the Earth Times reports.

Organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage this is an event for the rich, with over $9 million (£4.5 million) up for grabs, in addition to several cars.

"People are looking for beauty so if it is old and skinny it won't be considered. Nobody cares about anything that is old and ugly," commented Mr al-Mazrouei.

Part of the Mazayin Dhafra festival, camels also have a cultural part to play in Arab life. Throughout history the so-called "ships of the desert" have been used as transport across the acres of sand.
