2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brace yourself for a pirate invasion
04 06 2007
Every year during January Tampa is subjected to invasion by pirates.
Regularly drawing crowds of up to 500,000, the Gasparilla Pirate Fest features a genuine, fully-working pirate ship.
A parade through the town centre and live music combine to produce one of Florida's most vibrant festivals.
After the "invasion" and the formal surrender by the mayor of the town, the festival starts in earnest, which a procession of more than 100 floats.
Winding its way from Bay to Bay Boulevard, the procession goes up Platt Street Bridge and then along Florida Street to Jackson Street.
Around the time when most of Europe is usually labouring under a harsh winter, Florida will be basking itself in its almost year-round sunshine.
And Tampa itself is one of the best cities in the sunshine state, attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
Visitors shouldn't miss a visit to the Florida Aquarium or the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
