2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brit exodus

20 07 2007

For those lucky enough to be embarking on their holidays this weekend, they will be part of a mass exodus of Brits who are looking for warmer climes, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

As schools break out for summer, two million Brits are expected to leave home turf in search of sunny skies, sandy beaches and clear blue seas.

Justin Fleming, the Abta president, comments: "We all remember the excitement we felt when the summer holidays started. This year that excitement will be even greater as thousands of families escape the rain for fun in the sun abroad."

The most popular destinations for holidaymakers are Spain and the Balearics, as well as sun-soaked paradises Portugal, Greece and Turkey. Despite Europe selling well, the more adventurous tourists are heading to Egypt, Florida and the Caribbean.

Prospective airline passengers are being advised by the travel association to arrive prepared as airport resources are likely to be stretched with sun-seekers rushing to leave the country.

Abta has also announced this week that the internet has provided a host of travelling opportunities taking holidays into an "expanded universe".
