2008 News Archive - Holidays - Britons flock to Egypt

24 01 2007

The popularity of Egypt as a holiday destination is increasing rapidly, the Egyptian Tourism Authority has said today.

Over one million Britons visited the country in 2006, which represents a 23 per cent rise on the previous year. The number of nights stayed also increased by 21 per cent to over nine million, according to Travel Weekly.

Both boosting and as a result of this demand from holidaymakers, the country has recently seen a massive redevelopment, with areas such as the Red Sea Riviera in particular being back by huge investment programmes.

A multi-million dollar global advertising campaign entitled The Gift of the Sun has also made an impact, the publication reports.

Visitors to Egypt are treated to world-class scuba diving conditions and a wealth of archaeological treasures, the most famous of which is of course the Pyramids.

Also adding to the Egyptian experience are Nile Cruises, which allow tourists to travel at a stately pace down the famous river, retracing the routes travelled by centuries of kings and queens of this ancient land.

The country offers enough distractions to appeal to all types of holidaymaker, including golf courses, safari trips and excellent shopping. This is reflected in the fact that the total value of tourism to Egypt in 2006 was over $7 billion.
