2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brits brace themselves for big summer exodus

22 07 2008

Despite concerns about credit and the environment, two million Britons intend to jet overseas this July.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), this weekend (July 18th - 21st) saw roughly two million Brits pack their cases and fly abroad - with 160,000 passengers expected to have travelled through Manchester Airport and 460,000 having flown from Heathrow.

Research from Ascent-MI and Abta shows that plans for family holidays have not been affected by the credit crunch and that summer holiday bookings actually rose by one per cent in June 2008.

"With a changing economic climate, many existing trends have become more pronounced. Spain ... is still the top destination this year, but ... greater growth is being experienced in the mid to long haul destinations outside of the eurozone," Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta commented.

He noted that the US is doing well in terms of bookings while increased bookings have also been reported for sun-sure destinations like Tenerife and Lanzarote as well as France, Malta and the Caribbean.
