2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brits opt for 'weddings in the sun'

11 09 2008

Tired of the unpredictable weather, more and more British couples are choosing to marry abroad, it has been claimed.

A recent study by Halifax Travel Insurance revealed that the Caribbean is the top overseas wedding destination, with European countries such as Italy and Spain also proving popular.

Thea Darricotte, executive retail editor at Conde Nast Brides Magazine, said that in her experience, the number of people opting to tie the knot abroad was on the increase.

"With the climate change that is going on at the moment more and more people are thinking of sunnier climates where they are going to have more for their money and also pretty much good weather guaranteed," she explained.

Using Italy as an example, Ms Darricotte pointed out that food and drink was much cheaper than in the UK and said that it made sense for couples to marry abroad.

Meanwhile, research by Direct Line found that 24 per cent of Britons who married between 2004 and 2006 did so in a foreign country.
