2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brits 'search for winter sun'

26 09 2008

British holidaymakers are set to spend £8 billion on trips overseas this winter, a new study has revealed.

A study carried out by Abbey found that 15 million Britons are planning to jet abroad this autumn and winter.

Furthermore, the British summer has been so disappointing that six per cent of people are taking their first foreign holiday in three years.

Commenting on the findings, Callum Gibson, head of Abbey credit cards, said: "Clearly many Britons are in need of escaping our gloomy weather and heading overseas."

Some of the most popular winter sun destinations include the Balearic islands and southern Spain, with 41 per cent of people planning to travel to the Canaries this year.

The findings are consistent with a study carried out by alpharooms.com last week, which found that 82 per cent of people would rather sacrifice household luxuries than give up their holidays abroad.
