2008 News Archive - Holidays - Brits will flock to Canaries despite credit crunch, predicts expert

12 01 2009

A UK travel writer has predicted that Brits will continue to flock to the Canary Islands for the guaranteed sun, sea and sand this year despite the recession and the relative weakness of the pound against the euro.

Fred Mawer, who writes for the Telegraph travel section, said: "Our love affair with Spain is far from over. Almost certainly more British people will go on holiday here in 2009 than to any other country.

"The all-year appeal of the climate in the Canary Islands is also proving a draw."

Recent surveys have shown that Canary Island destinations like Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are likely to be among the most popular tourist hotspots for Brits looking to escape the doom and gloom of the current economic climate in the UK.

Skyscanner.com, a flight search website, found that Tenerife is among the top ten most searched for flight destinations of 2009.
