2008 News Archive - Holidays - Budget breaks 'to be found in Istanbul'

02 12 2008

A leading travel writer has recommended Istanbul as one of the world's best places to grab a break at bargain-basement prices.

Writing in the Times, Martin Symington said "if you have yearned to watch bulbous domes and slender minarets silhouetted against the setting sun, now is the time", adding that with the drop in the value of the Turkish lira, prices in Istanbul have become relatively cheap for UK tourists.

Mr Symington went on to say that many of the city's major attractions are cheap or even free like the majestic Blue Mosque.

He adds that tourists can take an intercontinental voyage for as little as £1.15 by crossing the Bosphorus, the strait that marks the border between Europe and Asia.

Last month the Turkish tourist board announced that its official website is one of the world's most visited based on rankings by the popular search engine Google.
