2008 News Archive - Holidays - Carnival crazy Croatia's cosmopolitan climax

07 11 2007

Visitors to Croatia can indulge themselves in the traditions and heritage of the country in many ways, but one of the best is by attending one of the many carnivals that take place around the country.

Rijeka hosts its carnival season in January and February (dates to be confirmed) with a series of processions, with the international carnival bringing the festivities to a cosmopolitan climax.

In the meantime, the various parades feature a number of traditional Slavic elements, such as the wearing of masks which traditionally were meant to scare off evil spirits, while there are bell ringers dressed as the defenders of the land against Turkish invaders centuries ago, Whatsonwhen reports.

Visitors will have no reason to be scared off from visiting a historic and attractive city which lies by Kvarna Bay on the country's Mediterranean Coast, offering an idyllic seascape to offer a few tranquil moments after the fun and noise of the daytime.
