2008 News Archive - Holidays - Celebrate St Trifon's day in Bulgaria

23 01 2009

Wine lovers going to Bulgaria on holiday next may be interested to learn that February 1st is the day on which Bulgarians celebrate St Trifon's Day, the patron saint of wine.

A pruning ceremony first started in Thracian times will take place at vineyard villages across Bulgaria, according to Whatsonwhen.

Traditionally, women will bake bread and roast chicken which will then be feasted upon after the pruning ceremony has concluded.

In each village, the man who is believed to have grown the most grapes is crowned king in a special ceremony and ordered to get drunk to make sure the following year sees a plentiful harvest.

Many Bulgarians celebrate St Trifon's Day instead of St Valentine's Day.

According to Quest Bulgaria Property and Lifesyle Magazine, Bulgaria's best wine is the Santa Sarah Privat 2006 which is "matured in German oak barrels, followed by a ten-month period in new French barrels" giving it an "inimitable taste".
