2008 News Archive - Holidays - Changes afoot at Cypress Gardens

03 06 2008

Central Florida's oldest theme park is continuing its revival following a difficult period in its history.

Cypress Gardens, which emerged from bankruptcy last year, is seeking to maintain its traditions while embracing the future, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Older attractions - such as water-ski shows and its lush gardens - remain, but changes have been made, including a behind-the-scenes tour at the park's Nature's Way animal area.

Another of the many improvements made is the addition of a shop selling locally sourced wines and candy.

Brian Philpot, a managing member of Cypress Gardens owner Land South Holdings, said: "Obviously, our expectations are to continue to solidify ourselves as a regional, family park here in Florida."

Steve Baker, president of Baker Leisure Group - the company which manages the site - added: "It's like opening a new park, but with the baggage of tradition."

Cypress Gardens was founded in 1936 and sets its 40-plus rides and attractions against a backdrop of botanical beauty.
