2008 News Archive - Holidays - CowParade visits Istanbul

09 07 2007

A parade of cows will join holidaymakers visiting Istanbul in August, as the world's biggest public art event hits Turkey for the first time.

From August 1st through until October 31st, street artists and celebrities alike will decorate around 150 fibreglass cows that will be displayed throughout the city. At the end of the event, most of the beautiful bovines will be auctioned off to raise money for charity.

Started in 1998 by Walter Knapp, the CowParade has seen success in 39 cities around the world. The gallery director of the Edinburgh CowParade exhibition, Richard Demarco, described the event as "city-transforming" when the parade arrived there last year.

"I like to see a modern art exhibition with its tongue in its cheek," he commented.

Over 5,000 artists have now taken part and its success is likely to continue as another parade is due to arrive in Mexico, among other countries, shortly.

Istanbul will also host the 12th race in the Formula One season on August 26th, with British eyes focusing on Lewis Hamilton.
