Croatia has been given the title of "rising star" by a global poll of travel destinations.

According to the Country Brand Index (CBI), Croatia is one of the top three countries most likely to become a major tourist destination in the next five years.

The CBI, which surveyed nearly 3,000 respondents from across nine countries, is compiled by FutureBrand in conjunction with Weber Shandwick's Global Travel and Lifestyle Practice.

Weber Shandwick's Global Travel says that by marketing themselves as a brand, countries can create the global recognition which will drive their tourism and travel industries more effectively.

Rina Plapler, senior executive director of FutureBrand, praised countries such as Croatia that have embraced the idea of selling themselves as a brand.

"However, we still feel this is a largely underdeveloped category with most countries continuing to promote and market themselves in ways that are not differentiated," she said.

Croatia is a popular holiday destination year round thanks to its combination of fantastic Mediterranean beaches and historic towns such as Dubrovnik.
