2008 News Archive - Holidays - Cypriot banks prepare for single currency

13 02 2007

Brits planning a trip to Cyprus next year may well have to stock up on euros, according to reports.

The European Commission confirmed today that Cyprus has applied to join the common currency, in a move that promises to make the country even more popular with holidaymakers.

Cyprus will become the 14th of the 27 EU nations to adopt the currency, if the plans are successful, and many tourists will welcome the proposal.

One of the most spectacular islands in Europe, Cyprus boasts a hugely diverse landscape, ranging from towering mountains and huge forests to intimate coves and sandy beaches.

Visitors can gain a sense of the country's true character by spending a few days in Nicosia, the country's capital city. Packed full of quaint shops and narrow streets, the old city is a beautiful example of traditional Cyprus. It also boasts a stunning business centre, striking for its high-rise buildings and cosmopolitanism.

A short drive from here will take you to the vine-covered Troodos Mountains, which are dotted with Byzantine monasteries and tiny villages.

Cyprus is already exceptionally popular with British tourists, but the early indications are that even more people will be encouraged to take the short flight across Europe once the European single currency has been adopted.
