2008 News Archive - Holidays - Cypriot derby

31 08 2007

Equestrian lovers may not think of Cyprus the centre of horse racing, but the Greek island has a history steeped in the subject.

Once the sport of Cypriot kings, the passion for equestrianism was revived in the country at the end of the 19th century and now those with fervour for stallions and mares may enjoy watching the animals compete in the Nicosia Race Club Cyprus Derby Cup.

The event is perhaps the most anticipated on the island as it boasts the biggest prize fund of £30,000.

All races are organised on Sundays and most Wednesdays during the winter at the Nicosia Racecourse in Ayios Dometios, which is a suburb of the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia.

Holidaymakers may enjoy taking a chance of winning and placing a few bets on the horses as well as revelling in the excitement of such an event.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and a former British colony.
