2008 News Archive - Holidays - Cyprus celebrates Christmas the old fashioned way

07 11 2008

As the UK gears up for the hectic holiday period, Ayia Napa, on the island of Cyprus, is preparing to celebrate Christmas at a more traditional pace.

The Ayia Napa department of culture has teamed up with the Cyprus tourism board to present a series of events showcasing the island's traditional culture throughout December.

Over Christmas events will include Christmas tree lighting and carols.

New Year's Eve will see a clay oven being fired in the main square to cook vassilopita, the traditional New Year's cakes that Cypriots share with their families.

The organisers of the events claim: "Ayia Napa, a small paradise on the island of Cyprus, still preserves the culture of the island with joy and love.

"Our culture represents an optimistic approach to life."

Perhaps the less hectic, "optimistic" approach to life is helped by the fact that Cyprus remains warm over the winter period, with average January temperatures of ten degrees C.
