2008 News Archive - Holidays - Dominican Republic dominates Caribbean

15 02 2007

The Dominican Republic is proving exceptionally popular with holidaymakers, who now rate it as the Caribbean's premier destination.

According to Dominican Today, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) rates the Dominican Republic alongside Puerto Rico as the region's most popular holiday choice.

More than 19 million people visited the Caribbean last year and 3.9 million of these enjoyed the various delights of the Dominican Republic. A further 3.8 million went to Puerto Rico, according to the new statistics.

England, Italy, Canada, Spain and the US are among the biggest growth markets for the Dominican Republic, with more and more people in all of these countries choosing this part of the world every year.

Most visitors to the Dominican Republic would admit that the beaches are one of the biggest reasons for visiting.

With 1,288 kilometres of sand, the Dominican Republic is a haven for beach lovers, not least because it is easy to find relatively unoccupied stretches of coastline. Playa Grande, Punta Cana and Saona Island are all particular favourites with those looking for a touch of Dominican magic.
