2008 News Archive - Holidays - Dominican Republic 'popular despite downturn'

19 01 2009

Tourists continued to flock to the Dominican Republic throughout 2008 despite the worldwide economic downturn, it has emerged.

The country attracted a record number of tourists last year, suggesting the recession has yet to have an effect on the popularity of the Caribbean island as a beach holiday destination.

According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, 4.3 million people visited the Dominican Republic last year as the country became increasingly popular with US and Canadian tourists in the know.

Francisco Javier Garcia, a Dominican Republic minister, told the newspaper: "Neither the unprecedented oil prices, nor the financial and real-estate […] could slow the advance of the most booming and critical sector of the Dominican economy."

Last year, golfing experts from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators awarded the country the coveted prize of Golfing Destination of the Year.
