2008 News Archive - Holidays - Egypt contests plans for new Wonders list
29 01 2007
A project conceived to come up with a new list of the Seven Wonders of the World has prompted a contemptuous response from Egypt.
International experts have compiled a list of 21 finalists and interested individuals have been encouraged to vote for their favourites. This means that the Pyramids of Giza will be forced to compete wit the likes of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Statue of Liberty to retain its place in the list.
A statement from New7Wonders, which is responsible for the new campaign, insists that it is now time to refresh the list in line with modern thinking.
"This is the biggest global vote ever to have taken place. Millions of people have already voted for their favourite 'wonder'. This journey will reach its pinnacle on July 7, 2007 - 07.07.07 - when the world will discover which monuments have been named as the New 7 Wonders of the World," the team has claimed.
Officials in Egypt have been understandably unimpressed and some have suggested that the Pyramids should not have to compete for a place.
As reported by the Middle East news Agency, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities believes that the pyramids are already "living in the hearts of people around the globe".
As a holiday destination, Egypt is about as interesting as anywhere in the world, with its ancient history complemented by the enduring popularity of the Nile. The Red Sea Coast is also all the rage, with its exemplary beaches, enviable climate and superlative scuba-diving conditions.
