2008 News Archive - Holidays - Egypt set for Christmas holiday invasion

14 11 2007

Thousands of Britons are set to fly down to Egypt to spend Christmas in the sun, it has been reported.

The north African country is one of the top destinations for UK travellers, with numbers set to rise by 31 per cent this year, the Daily Mail reports.

In particular, those escaping the winter weather will be heading for the popular resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh, Co-op Travel has said.

Those spending the festive season in the country will be able to sample some very different Christmas celebrations there.

Coptic traditions see the festival celebrated throughout December and January, with the latter month the focal point of the festival, Whatsonwhen.com reports.

While the Christmas Eve midnight church service might be familiar enough, culinary novelties include the eating of fata, a meal of rice, garlic and meat, while Christmas Day is spent visiting friends with kaik, a type of shortbread.
