2008 News Archive - Holidays - Egyptian president announces increased focus on tourism

03 11 2008

The president of Egypt has ordered the government to focus on tourism as a major source of income, according to the Associated Press.

Speaking in Cairo over the weekend, President Hosni Mubarak announced that his government will focus on attracting investment in tourism in an effort to boost the country's economy.

Egypt, already a popular destination for those searching for winter sun, could become an even more attractive holiday prospect as increased investment in the tourism sector means that it could develop rapidly.

The current strength of the pound against the Egyptian pound might also mean greater bargains for Brits.

Gill Williams, travel editor of the Daily Mirror, said that Egypt is "probably the best value winter sun holiday this season thanks to the strength of sterling against the Egyptian pound".

Egypt welcomed nearly ten million visitors in 2007, but the government is hoping to increase that figure to 14 million by 2011 according to Mena, the state news agency.
