2008 News Archive - Holidays - Elf Academy in Lapland

18 12 2007

As tourism incentives go it is fairly unique, but Lapland Vocational College will be offering a one-year Elfing course from April 2008, it has been reported.

According to the Daily Mail, elves are popular with the tourists who visit the region over Christmas and the Rovaniemi college aims to capitalise on this by offering the certification of fully-qualified Elves.

Kari Rekild, project manager of the Elf Academy, told the newspaper that the course was aimed at those looking for a permanent career in elfing.

"Qualifying as an Elf won't be easy and the students must take a series of exams to pass the course. There's a lot of history and mythology surrounding Christmas in Lapland," the project manager added.

Elves must also undergo a makeover including dyeing their hair red and donning red and green clothing.

Their job function will include keeping tourists safe on Husky tours and sleigh rides.

A two-and-a-half year Santa training programme is also available at the nearby university, it is reported.
