Brits holidaying in the Algarve this summer may find they are greeted by taxi drivers with an extraordinarily good grasp of English.

According to a report in the Algarve Resident, taxi drivers working in the region are to receive lessons in English to make life easier for their passengers and to further boost the Algarve's reputation as one of Europe's friendliest destinations.

The taxi drivers will also receive lessons in customer service and public relations as part of the scheme, which the Algarve Tourism Board hopes will be welcomed by visitors to Portugal.

The tourism board has insisted that the quality of customer service is absolutely central to the perception that tourists have of an area and the idea is that the English lessons will ensure holidaymakers leave the Algarve suitably impressed.

Thanks to its world-class golf courses and immaculate white beaches, the Algarve has long been a favourite destination with visitors from around the world.

Among the dozens of spectacular golf courses in the Algarve are Gramacho, Morgado, Boavista, Alto Golf and Benamor, all of which attract thousands of passionate players every year.

Favourite beaches, meanwhile, include Meia Praia, Praia da Gale and Praia da Armona, which are popular with watersports enthusiasts and lazy loungers alike.
