2008 News Archive - Holidays - Experience the 'slow' side of Italy

18 08 2008

British holidaymakers are invited to experience Italy's "silliest and slowest" race this October.

The famous Palio degli Asini donkey race – which takes place on October 5th in the Piedmont region – is one of Italy's best-loved races and promises to be an event that the whole family can enjoy.

With a history dating back to 1275, the race takes place annually to mark the start of the white truffle season and this year's event also coincides with the famous Truffle Fair in Alba.

"Locals dress in medieval costumes. And the riders of the famed donkeys are local celebrities. Visitors will be caught up in all the fun and excitement of this wonderful medieval tradition that has withstood the test of time," reports the Relais San Maurizio.

Highlights of Italy's Piedmont region include the city of Turin, Lake Maggiore and the ski resort of Bardonecchia.

Those interested in soaking up the region's culture can take a trip to the Abbey of Vezzolano or the Borgogna Museum.
