2008 News Archive - Holidays - Festival draws thousands to Tenerife

17 07 2008

A centuries-old festival has drawn thousand of revellers to the island of Tenerife in the Canaries again this year.

The annual celebration in honour of the Virgin of Carmen saw a statue paraded through the streets of local towns and up to 25,000 people get involved in the various activities in Puerto de la Cruz.

Estimates of the total number attending the festivities vary but it is thought that most took the time to sample some of the local wines and soak one another with water pistols.

The tradition dates back to the 18th century and is of particular significance to Tenerife's hard-working fisherman, some of whom took their revelry into the sea this time around, the Metro reports.

Experts from Luxury Travel Magazine recently suggested that British families are unlikely to abandon their foreign holiday plans despite the financial squeeze and economic gloom following the onset of the credit crunch.
