2008 News Archive - Holidays - Foreign currency sales are 'still strong'

22 09 2008

It may be mid-September, but foreign currency sales are still looking strong, it has been revealed.

Figures released by the Post Office last week show that sales of the euro are up six per cent on last year, while demand for the dollar has increased by 12 per cent.

Furthermore, the Egyptian pound and Turkish lira are among the fastest growing currencies, with sales up 24 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Commenting on the figures, Helen Warburton, Post Office head of travel services, said: "The euro and US dollar are continuing to sell extremely well, despite the weakness of sterling and foreign currency sales are up collectively across the board."

Ms Warburton suggested that despite the credit crunch, Britons were showing no signs of giving up their holidays.

In related news, holidaymakers were last week warned to buy insurance before travelling.

The warning came after a study by American Express and YouGov revealed that 14.5 million Britons plan to travel without insurance this year.
