2008 News Archive - Holidays - Freezing Brits head to the Maldives

07 02 2007

The luxury tropical islands of the Maldives are proving to be a favourite destination for Brits looking to escape the winter cold.

According to lastminute.com, many Brits have snapped up long-haul package deals to escape the big freeze. Far-away destinations are in fact among the fastest growing type of break in January.

Thailand and the Maldives saw the biggest rise in popularity in the month. Morocco and Croatia were third and fourth respectively.

Sales for the Maldives have tripled, and John Bevan, lastminute.com's travel director, said: "People often assume that a trip to the Maldives is way beyond their budgets, but the truth is that holidays in the Indian Ocean have become far more affordable in recent years."

Other climbers in popularity included South Africa and Gambia, up 123 per cent and 77 per cent respectively from the previous year's figures.

The overall best selling destination in January was Egypt, followed by France and Spain.
