10 05 2007

The Durban July Handicap is one of the oldest and most famous horse races in the world and the number one event for South Africa's racing cognoscenti.

First held in 1897, the race has never failed to draw crowds eager to see exciting finishes and some of the best horseflesh in the world.

Hosted by the beautiful Greyville Racecourse, the main race takes place over 2.2 kilometres and is bet on by almost everyone present.

However, there are a plethora of other races, including the 1.6km Garden Province Stakes, the 3km Gold Vase, the 1.4km Golden Slipper and the 1.4km Golden Horseshoe.

Nestled on the slopes of the glorious Drakensberg Mountains, Durban is without doubt one of the most picturesque cities in South Africa.

Tourists have been flocking to this vibrant city for decades, due to its beautiful beaches and warm subtropical climate.

Durban is also the site of the Suncoast Casino, one of the most popular gambling destinations in the country.
